Ceramic Coating in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, mostly silicon dioxide, that bonds chemically to your clear coat and forms a semi-permanent protective layer. Applied professionally over corrected paint, it lasts 2 to 5 years, repels water and road grime, and resists UV fading and chemical etching from bird droppings and tree sap.
What ceramic coating actually does
Wax and sealants sit on top of your paint as a sacrificial layer and wash away over weeks or months. A ceramic coating is different. The silicon dioxide in the coating cross-links with the clear coat as it cures, creating a hard, glass-like layer that is chemically part of the surface rather than resting on it.
That bond is what buys the durability. Instead of reapplying protection every few months, a coated vehicle keeps a hydrophobic, chemical-resistant surface for years. Water sheets off instead of clinging, brake dust and road film rinse away with far less agitation, and contaminants get far less opportunity to etch into the paint.
Why coastal BC is hard on unprotected paint
The Lower Mainland puts a specific set of stresses on a finish. Long rainy stretches keep road film and traffic grime on the paint for weeks at a time. Coastal salt air accelerates corrosion around trim and fasteners. Neighbourhood tree canopies drop sap through the spring and summer, and winter brings road salt and brine from the highways.
Every one of those is a chemical attack on the clear coat. A coating gives that clear coat a barrier to take the abuse instead, and makes the maintenance washes in between details genuinely faster.
The preparation is the job
A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If swirl marks, water spots and bonded contamination are still on the paint when the coating goes down, they are sealed under a layer designed to last years.
That is why most of the work on a coating appointment happens before a drop of coating is applied. The paint is washed, chemically decontaminated, clayed, machine polished to remove defects, and then wiped down with a panel prep solution to strip every trace of polishing oil so the coating can bond to bare clear coat.
- Full decontamination wash, wheels, arches and door jambs included
- Iron and fallout removal with a dedicated chemical decontaminant
- Clay treatment to shear off bonded surface contamination
- Machine polishing to the correction level the paint needs
- Panel wipe to remove polishing oils before coating
What we use
We apply Gyeon coatings, a professional line with a higher concentration of active silicon dioxide than the consumer products sold off the shelf. Decontamination is handled with CarPro iron removers, and correction is done with Rupes and Flex polishers running Koch Chemie compounds.
The difference between a professional coating and a bottle bought online is partly the chemistry and mostly the process. A consumer coating applied over uncorrected, unstripped paint will not deliver anything close to the durability on the label.
Living with a coated car
A coating is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and the two-bucket method, or have a maintenance wash scheduled, and keep automatic brush washes away from it. Those brushes are the single fastest way to put swirl marks back into paint you just paid to have corrected.
Kept that way, a professionally applied single-layer coating holds its hydrophobic behaviour for years rather than months, and the paint underneath stays in the condition it was in on the day it was coated.
Our Ceramic Coating Process
- 01
Assessment
We inspect the paint in good light to establish the defect level and what correction stage the vehicle needs.
- 02
Decontamination
Full wash, iron and fallout removal, and a clay treatment to leave the surface chemically and physically clean.
- 03
Correction
Machine polishing to remove swirls, scratches and oxidation, so the coating locks in a corrected finish.
- 04
Panel prep
A dedicated wipe-down that strips polishing oils and leaves bare clear coat for the coating to bond to.
- 05
Application
The coating is applied panel by panel and levelled by hand within its flash window.
- 06
Cure
The vehicle stays dry while the coating cures. We tell you exactly how long before it can meet weather.
How long it takes
A coating appointment usually runs across more than one day, because the correction stage that comes first is the longest part and the coating needs undisturbed cure time afterwards. We confirm the schedule for your vehicle when we quote it.
Who it suits
- New vehicles being protected before the first winter
- Paint that has just been corrected and needs the result preserved
- Daily drivers parked outside year-round
- Owners who would rather wash less often and never wax again
Ceramic Coating Questions
How long does ceramic coating last?
Two to five years for most professionally applied single-layer coatings, with premium multi-layer systems going longer. Durability depends far more on how the vehicle is washed and stored than on the product itself.
Does ceramic coating stop scratches?
No. A coating adds hardness and resists light marring and chemical etching, but it will not prevent scratches from stones, brush washes or careless drying. It protects against contamination and UV far more than physical impact.
Do I need paint correction before a coating?
In almost every case, yes. A coating seals in the condition of the paint underneath it, so swirls and water spots left in place stay visible for the life of the coating.
Can you apply a coating at my home?
Yes. We are fully mobile across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland and work in driveways, underground parking and workplace lots, provided the vehicle can stay dry through the cure.
