Exterior Detailing, Clay and Seal
Clay and seal is a complete exterior detail: a decontamination wash, an iron and fallout treatment, a clay bar pass that shears bonded contamination off the paint, and a paint sealant that protects the finish for around six months. It leaves paint that feels glass-smooth rather than gritty.
Why washing is not enough
Run a hand over your paint after a wash. If it feels like fine sandpaper, the car is clean but not decontaminated. What you are feeling is industrial fallout, rail dust, brake particles and tree sap that have bonded to the clear coat, and no amount of shampoo will lift them.
Those particles are also the reason unprotected paint deteriorates. Embedded iron rusts in place and etches outward into the clear coat, which is why a neglected finish develops orange speckling that no wash will remove.
What the clay stage does
Chemical decontamination comes first, with a dedicated iron remover that dissolves the embedded metal particles. Whatever the chemistry cannot reach is sheared off mechanically by a clay bar drawn across a lubricated surface.
The result is paint that is physically smooth for the first time since it was new. That matters beyond feel: sealants and coatings bond properly to a decontaminated surface and poorly to a contaminated one, so this stage decides how long the protection that follows will actually last.
- Pre-rinse and foam to lift loose grit before anything touches the paint
- Two-bucket contact wash, wheels and arches cleaned separately
- Iron and fallout remover across paint and wheels
- Clay treatment over the full body with dedicated lubricant
- Door jambs cleaned and wiped down
- Wheels and tires cleaned and dressed
- Exterior glass cleaned
- Paint sealant applied, roughly six months of protection
Sealant or ceramic coating
A sealant is a synthetic protective layer that sits on top of the paint. It gives real gloss and water repellency and holds up for around six months before it needs redoing, which suits a car that gets detailed a couple of times a year.
A ceramic coating bonds chemically with the clear coat instead and lasts years rather than months. It costs more up front and requires the paint to be corrected first. If you would rather set protection and forget it for several seasons, that is the path; if you want a strong result now with no long commitment, clay and seal is the one.
Keeping it between details
The fastest way to undo an exterior detail is an automatic brush wash. Those brushes carry grit from every vehicle ahead of you and drag it across your clear coat.
Between full details, a maintenance wash on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly schedule keeps contamination from bonding again, which means the next detail starts from a much better baseline and less has to be taken off the paint.
Our Clay and Seal Process
- 01
Pre-rinse and foam
Loose dirt and grit are lifted off before any mitt touches the paint.
- 02
Contact wash
Two-bucket method, with wheels, arches and door jambs handled separately.
- 03
Chemical decontamination
Iron and fallout remover dissolves embedded metal particles in paint and wheels.
- 04
Clay treatment
A clay bar shears off whatever bonded contamination the chemistry could not reach.
- 05
Dry
Dried with clean microfiber and forced air through panel gaps, mirrors and badges.
- 06
Seal
A paint sealant is applied for roughly six months of protection, then wheels and tires are dressed.
How long it takes
A clay and seal on a typical car is a half-day job. Paired with a full interior it becomes a complete detail, which usually runs 4 to 6 hours depending on size and condition.
Who it suits
- Cars that have never been decontaminated
- Paint that feels rough after washing
- Owners who want strong protection without committing to a coating
- Vehicles being prepared for photos or for sale
Clay and Seal Questions
How long does the sealant last?
Around six months, depending on how the vehicle is washed and whether it is parked outside. A ceramic coating is the option when you want years rather than months.
What does a clay bar actually remove?
Bonded contamination that washing cannot lift: industrial fallout, rail dust, brake particles, overspray and tree sap that have attached themselves to the clear coat.
Will this remove swirl marks?
No. Swirls are defects in the clear coat itself and need machine polishing. Clay and seal cleans, decontaminates and protects, but does not correct.
Do you need a water source at my location?
We arrive with a self-contained setup. We just need vehicle access and a power outlet nearby.
