Headlight Restoration in the Lower Mainland

Headlight restoration removes the oxidised, UV-damaged surface layer from a polycarbonate lens through progressive wet sanding, polishes the lens back to clarity, and then applies a fresh UV-resistant coating so the yellowing does not simply return within months.

Why headlights go yellow

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate is tough and light, but it degrades under ultraviolet light, so manufacturers apply a hard UV-resistant coating at the factory.

That factory coating has a service life. Once years of sun, road grit and washing have worn through it, the bare polycarbonate underneath starts oxidising, and the lens turns hazy and yellow from the outside in. The damage is on the surface, which is exactly why it can be removed.

This is a safety item, not just cosmetics

A clouded lens scatters light instead of projecting it. Output drops and the beam pattern the reflector was designed around breaks down, which shortens how far ahead you can actually see.

On wet Lower Mainland roads through the winter, on unlit stretches and in heavy rain, that difference is the one that matters. Restoring the lens restores the beam.

Why cheap restorations turn yellow again

A polish-only job looks excellent for a few weeks. It is removing oxidation without replacing the UV protection that failed in the first place, so the now-bare polycarbonate is exposed directly to sunlight and oxidises again, often faster than before.

The step that makes a restoration last is the one that is easiest to skip: sealing the lens with a fresh UV-resistant coating after polishing. That is what puts back the layer the factory applied and the years wore off.

Headlight Restoration Questions

How long does headlight restoration last?

It depends almost entirely on whether a UV coating was applied afterwards. Polishing alone can start hazing again within months. A sealed lens holds its clarity far longer.

Can every headlight be restored?

Not all. If the haze is inside the lens from moisture ingress, or the lens has cracked or delaminated internally, surface work cannot reach it. We check that before quoting.

Is restoration better than replacing the headlight?

For surface oxidation, restoration addresses the actual problem at a fraction of the cost of a new assembly. Damaged or internally fogged units are a replacement job.
